12月27日 If they only knew...It has become tradition for Husband to take my sons -- his stepsons -- shopping after Christmas.
He gives each of them $100 to spend however they wish: "You can buy $100 worth of candy, if you want," he foolishly told #4 Son the first year. He hasn't... yet.
After their money has been spent, Husband treats them to dinner and a movie of their choosing.
It's a wonderful thing, I think. The boys learn the value of waiting for sales; they learn to differentiate between "wants" and "needs"; they learn a little about buyer's remorse. (The first year, #4 Son bought himself a $70 pair of shoes, only to return them about 20 minutes later, when he realized the purchase had "totally sucked up all my money!")
There is just one rule: I'm not allowed to go.
I always put on a little show of how ignored I feel, and ask them pitifully if they'll bring me back a souvenir of their Excellent Adventure. I pout while they decide which movie to go see, and beg for the leftovers from their fancy meal.
This afternoon, while there was great bustling around in preparation for their departure, I moped around in my jammies and slippers, drinking coffee and sighing periodically. I gave them my best "Never mind me, I'll just sit home here by myself" routine, but I'm pretty sure they all know better. Especially Husband.
He knows. This gift is for ME.
While they're gone, I can watch whatever I want on TV. I can eat whatever I want -- without a single, "Hey! That looks good! Can I have a little bite?". I can let the phone ring to the answering machine. I don't have "save" my spot when I leave the living room, for fear of losing my chair. I can lock the back door, listen to the radio -- loud -- and dance my ridiculous mom-dance without risk of mocking and ridicule.
And when they come home, tired but happy, I'll listen with an envious look on my face to the stories of the treasures they found at the mall, the fabulous dinner they had, and the movie that either delighted or disappointed them.
It's a good life.
What'd YOU get for Christmas?
