If they only knew...

It has become tradition for Husband to take my sons -- his stepsons -- shopping after Christmas.

He gives each of them $100 to spend however they wish: "You can buy $100 worth of candy, if you want," he foolishly told #4 Son the first year. He hasn't... yet.

After their money has been spent, Husband treats them to dinner and a movie of their choosing.

It's a wonderful thing, I think. The boys learn the value of waiting for sales; they learn to differentiate between "wants" and "needs"; they learn a little about buyer's remorse. (The first year, #4 Son bought himself a $70 pair of shoes, only to return them about 20 minutes later, when he realized the purchase had "totally sucked up all my money!")

There is just one rule: I'm not allowed to go.

I always put on a little show of how ignored I feel, and ask them pitifully if they'll bring me back a souvenir of their Excellent Adventure. I pout while they decide which movie to go see, and beg for the leftovers from their fancy meal.

This afternoon, while there was great bustling around in preparation for their departure, I moped around in my jammies and slippers, drinking coffee and sighing periodically. I gave them my best "Never mind me, I'll just sit home here by myself" routine, but I'm pretty sure they all know better. Especially Husband.

He knows. This gift is for ME.

While they're gone, I can watch whatever I want on TV. I can eat whatever I want -- without a single, "Hey! That looks good! Can I have a little bite?". I can let the phone ring to the answering machine. I don't have "save" my spot when I leave the living room, for fear of losing my chair. I can lock the back door, listen to the radio -- loud -- and dance my ridiculous mom-dance without risk of mocking and ridicule.

And when they come home, tired but happy, I'll listen with an envious look on my face to the stories of the treasures they found at the mall, the fabulous dinner they had, and the movie that either delighted or disappointed them.

It's a good life.

What'd YOU get for Christmas?

Sounds like a wonderful tradition your husband and boys have. That's what makes family memories that last a lifetime. I hope you enjoyed your day of "ME" this year, ate something nummy and watched something mind-numbing, danced a little and waited for the men to come home!

Kay,

I got spoiled this Christmas...see my space and an earlier post about all the lovely items I got...my favorite? It's hard to choose, but I think it was King Size pillows...who knew I could get so excited about bedroom accessories.

I think this is a wonderful treat for Husband and Sons. They seem to enjoy it and I have a feeling it is a tradition only to continue when they have their own fabulous, loud, seat and food stealing sons!

I'm glad you had a wonderful day alone...it sounds fantastic.

Shhh, don't post that here! They might find out! *big, frightened eyes*

I love having the house to myself, and I'm still one of those annoying children-type things myself. I hope it was nice and quiet and peaceful for you.

To answer your question, for Christmas I got enough reading material to ensure that I will get absolutely no studying done next semester, so I am blissfully content. I also got to see my electronics-addicted younger brother smile as he unwrapped the board game I bought him, and then open and assemble it as soon as we'd finished with the gifts. That also made Mom and Dad smile, so I was pretty pleased with myself.

And will someone please inform Mr. Chard that plenty of North Americans know perfectly well what crayfish are? And I know how they're prepared, the poor things.

Oh, my poor amateur: suggest a week in Disney for the boys (sans mom) next year. It'll do wonders for your peace of mind... ;)

no, jack.. i think she said, 'chimp'..
what an awesome man, kay. step-parenting
is SOOO hard, to begin with.
the day after christmas, i got together with my
son for a bit. he got me a jesus candle, and some
bathroom foofoo stuff. but on christmas day, i
was alone. going through the old photos, school
stuff of the kids, old notes, etc... the best gift i got
that day was an old note that my son had written to
me. i made alot of sacrifices to make sure he had
things that he wanted. when he was about 15-16,
he wanted something i couldn't afford. he was
complaining about it, and i broke down and cried.
it broke his heart, and i got this note:
"dear mom, i am very sorry. i will NEVER complain about something you can't do anything about again.
AND I MEAN IT!! sorry!" complete with pictures of
cute little creatures with 'sorry' bubbles. quiet christmas.
a little lonesome, but very nice. happy new year, kay!

Having no one around is always a good feeling. Well, sometimes, unless it becomes less of a treat and more of a life-style. Then it's not such a good idea.

And I may have to convert my own father to this "$100, dinner, and a movie" idea. I rather enjoy it. As for my present list, you'll have to wait, when I find the time (and by find the time, I mean stop playing comp. games) I'll update my space and possibly add pics of all of my presents.

What a lovely tradition! My husband did something similar for me this year by getting me a spa day (and children are not welcome there). The lockers at this spa are all named for famous women in the shower room and somehow I always end up with Mother Theresa. Not that she's not great and all, but it makes me feel extra foofy for being there in comparision.

This time I'm hoping to catch Marilyn Monroe or Rita Hayworth or something.

I'm just glad it's all over, aren't you? If this doesn't reduce my stress then I'm buying a trip to the batting cages next.

I got to see the real children be thrilled with everything they opened. I don't know if it was real "thrill" but they did a good job of making it look that way.
Got to see my son relish in the fact that he now had ten DVD's of Dean Martin's variety show to watch when he travels. He was born in the wrong decade. He would have made a perfect sixties child.

It was all great!!!

Oh, Kay, your husband sounds fabulous. Good catch, woman.

I bought Braeden a fish tank complete with fish, and it's turned out to be LOTS of fun for me. Why didn't I ever have fish before? Now one of our fish has had BABIES!! Yay! Yay! (Maybe this will help my baby fever.)

Anyway, I have pictures of the fish on my site, come see!

Nice deal for everyone!

I got to enjoy both of my grandchildren's first Christmas, which, as you know, is pretty uneventful when they are 7 and 8 months old. But I enjoyed it just the same.

My Christmas was good, I got to see my mum for as little time as possible, hooray! AND Alicia came over, which was awesome.

For those of you who are American/Canadian/Stupid/Whatever, Crayfish or "Western Rock Lobster" is... well... a lobster, but they don't have claws, and according to my dad, taste better. They also speak fluent Japanese, and as a result, cost more. My dearest friend Alicia here had never tried both crayfish AND prawns (shrimp?). And she calls herself Australian... tsk tsk tsk... But under my dad's stern eyes, she devoured those shellfish, and she enjoyed them, and they all lived happily ever after, the end.
